We typically have eight trainees in each 10-week Seasonal Program, and the same amount of mentors. This one-to-one ratio allows trainees to learn practical skills from industry professionals in a supportive setting, whilst they gain valuable paid work experience during busy Scarf Dinner services. Mentoring at Scarf is an empowering and valuable experience for all involved. Graduates have referred to mentors as "friendly shadows" who provide integral support as they build their confidence throughout the season. Mentors in previous Scarf Programs have said: “I've told people that this is my favourite thing that I've ever done. Being able to impart the skills that I have learned over the years in a way that actually helps someone fills me with a lot of joy." "The trainees just need the chance to prove to themselves and others what they are capable of, and with a little guidance can be opened up to a lot more opportunities.” "Watching the progress of the trainees over the last couple of weeks makes me feel amazingly proud.” “Scarf is a warm and welcoming team with an innovative approach. Trainees develop a range of skills and knowledge working on the floor and in the bar. They build confidence, make new friends and establish connections within the industry.” . After undertaking the program induction, which focusses on mentoring young people from culturally diverse backgrounds and goal-setting through a 'Trauma-Informed' framework, mentors volunteer their time at weekly Scarf Dinners, helping the service run smoothly while maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment.
