Today is World Refugee Day, and we’re taking the opportunity to celebrate the immense courage, resilience and valuable contributions made by refugees to Australian society.

If you came along to an Autumn Scarf Dinner at The Rochey, you may have been served by Ngot, who became a Scarf trainee in February and graduated in late May 2019. Having searched fruitlessly for a job for over a year, Ngot joined Scarf with an incredibly positive attitude and took as much as he could from every training session and Scarf Dinner. 

The Scarf team has been privileged to see Ngot go through a huge transformation in a short space of time; a week before graduating, Ngot proudly told us he’d landed himself in full-time employment. In the lead up to working at our special fundraising dinner, Do More Than Dine '19we asked Ngot to answer a few questions. 


Ngot has generously given us permission to share his words. 

Q. What did Scarf help you with the most?

A. First of all, Scarf is like a second home to me. The program gave me all the necessary tools, skills and work experience I needed in hospitality sector, I was able to learn customer service, working behind the bar, how to write dockets, how to carry three plates, working at the pass, how to write resumes, made new amazing people that became friends and most importantly I was able to build my confidence throughout the program. And now I have secured myself a job which was hard to come by before I joined Scarf.

Q. What have you been doing since graduating from Scarf?

A. I started a new role which is a full-time, paid Communication Traineeship with YWCA. Without Scarf I would not have pass two interviews and secure this role and I also get the chance to study while working (Certificate III in Business). YWCA is leading national feminist organisation working towards a future where all women, young women and girls are equal, safe and respected. We advocate for women leading change, and fight for gender equality and women’s rights. The traineeship is is going so great, I’m learning new things everyday on how to run an office job. The people here are so nice and I’m enjoying it so far. I am also working a second job on the weekends, at Bodriggy Brewing CoI am thankful and grateful for everything Scarf did for me. 

Q. Why did you say yes to working at Do More Than Dine?

A. I accept to work with Do More Than Dine because I think it is high time for me to apply those skills and experience I gained throughout the program, and engage with new people as well. I also believe there is always a lot to learn in hospitality so I am very keen in learning new things whenever I get an opportunity like this.
